Literature Analysis Blog: Period 4A/4B

Literature Analysis Blog: Due by Friday, January 11, 2013.

First: For your title, state the name of the book and the author.

Second: You will write a six paragraph literature analysis.  Each of the following topic areas are  required in your “blog” analysis.  Write at least one paragraph on each of the topics:

  • Plot Summary
  • Characterization
  • Setting
  • Conflict
  • Theme
  • Point of View and Style
Finally:  For full credit and after submitting your blog, read at least one other person’s analysis and make a two to three sentence comment. You are expected to use good grammar and spelling, so maybe type it in Microsoft Word before pasting and publishing it to the blog.

Note: If your blog is over 4500 characters, you will have to split it into two blogs, part one and part two.

Here is a break down on each topic:

Plot summary:  The plot is a brief but thorough summary of the story. You should exhibit knowledge of the five stages of the plot in your summary (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution).

Characterization: The characters in the story are the people or animals that author uses to represent various events and actions. When discussing the characters, please, identify their physical traits and personality attributes and explain how each of them interrelates amongst one another in the story.

Setting: The setting of a story is usually represented by its depiction of time and place. While the author may state the original settings in the story, it is important that readers know that there could be various settings in the story as well. The expressions of events and actions do change from place to place and time to time.

Conflict: The conflicts that occur in a literary work are usually expressed as internal or external. Conflicts are the problems that the characters have as they interrelate amongst one another, and as they express their inner thoughts and feelings in a story. Please, make sure that you identify the internal and external conflicts in your story analysis; and make sure that you use references from the story to support your points.

Theme: What is the universal meaning that the story provides you? How do you explain the fact that you have gotten the message in the story? A theme is usually the universal message or idea that is identified by the reader or audience. In stating the theme of a story, you should be able to express how much meaning and impact that the story had on you. A story may have as many themes as possible; however, you should choose one theme that you can fully discuss, using evidence from the story.

The following two topics can be combined into one paragraph:

Point of view: The point of view of a story is usually the angle from which the author tells his or her story. It is usually expressed in either the first person, second person, or third person.
  • In the first person point of view, the author or narrator tells his or her story; it is mostly used in autobiographical or eyewitness reports.
  • The second person point of view is rarely used in narratives.
  • The third person point of view can be expressed in either third person limited or omniscient.
    • In the third person limited, the narrator is usually not included as a character in the story. He or she is detached from the story; however, he or she is able to narrate the story based on what can be determined from one character in the story.
    • In the third person omniscient, the character is fully involved in the story. He or she is able to see everything that is going on in the minds of the characters and is able to tell the movement of the characters as they progress from stage to stage.
Style: The manner in which an author expresses himself or herself in writing.
  • The language that the authors use to convey their thoughts. What kinds of words are used? Do you find them too lofty and difficult to understand? Do you find them easy to read? How are the words arranged?
  • Figurative language. Is there lots of imagery? Is there flashback and foreshadowing used? Are there lots of literary devices used?
  • What are the structure and organization of writing? Is it in letter form, does it have paragraphs separating main ideas? Are there lots of dialogues or just one long straight narrative? What does the title of the story tell you about what to expect?
  • What Kind of grammar is used? What punctuation style do the authors use?

  1. Part 1

Suicide Notes : By Micheal Thomas Ford.

Jeff was a fifteen year old boy who woke up in a mental hospital psychiatric ward for attempting suicide on New Year's Day. He refuse to cooperate with the nurses and his psychiatrist Dr. Katzrupus, who he nicknamed Cat Poop because his name was a bit complicated to say and remember. Jeff argued that he was fine and did not need a psychiatrist, however, Dr. Katzrupus reasoned that he thinks he is fine but in reality, it may not seem that way. The forty-five-day program was made to determined the cause of Jeff's distress and work on his healing progress. Individual counseling session is required with Dr. Katzrupus and other patients. As the forty-five-day program begin, Jeff wanted nothing to do with other patients, then as the days go on, Jeff develops some sort of relationships with all of them, and they all contribute a piece of the puzzle to allow Jeff to open up about why he tried to kill himself. Each time this happens, it’s like a light turns on in his brain, and Jeff makes some progress. When everyone found out about the reason why he wanted to kill himself, it was already the thirty-seventh day. Burke, Allie's boyfriend rejected Jeff's confession because he was homosexual at a party right before Christmas. That rejection led him into the thought and action of attempt suicide. The last day, Jeff's mind wondered to Valentine where he and Allie write to each other about all the cheesy quotes. His letter to Allie was a fresh start to him and their friendship.

Jeff was a funny and witty kid. He does not take the therapist sessions very seriously in the beginning however, as the days go by, awkward friendships made around the psychiatric ward where many refuse to open up to others. But, friendship is friendship nonetheless. Allie and Jeff were best friends until their friendship shattered by his confession to Burke, her boyfriend. Burke was in one of those brother-friend relationship with Jeff, however, Jeff wanted something more and that something more will surely ruin their friendship in all shape and form.

In the beginning, it was New-year's Day. Winter, that is. Spring never came in the story, or Summer nor Fall. Only winter. The snow packed on like it was make-up on face. Those leafless trees look like witch's bony fingers. The temperature is literally below zero. Psychiatric ward is a hospital for the care and treatment of patients affected with acute or chronic mental illness. Also called mental hospital. The place where Jeff was put in along with other patients who thinks they do not need help.

  2. Part 2

Excepting the new him was hard, Jeff wanted nothing to do with sexual orientation. He struggle to open himself up to his doctor and other patients. Patience was the only thing Dr. Katzrupus could give him. Time was another matter, he only had forty-five days with Jeff and every patient needs a certain amount of time to heal and open their ears to hear what other people are trying to say. Jeff was actually afraid to tell his parents about why he wanted to die. While thinking on how to mend his friendship back with Allie, he realize that there are tons of homosexual people in this world. He was 'normal', not different as he thought he was.

The meaning behind this story was that suicide is not the only option you have when things get too difficult to deal with, humiliation is too pressurizing and being different. People tend to think that it is the easy way out of situations they do not wish to be dealt with, they do not realize that they have people with them that accept them for who they are. Not everyone is judgmental like some narrow-minded people. Sometimes it is okay to stop and view life as if it was a painting. You were born for a reason. Taking life for granted is like tell yourself to throw away those bacon. You're just going to just toss away something that precious without giving it a try first?

This novel is definitely in first person. Well it is obviously first person because every sentence it refers to 'I' and 'My' Not a lot of thought thoughts from other characters. See what Jeff is seeing, hear what he is hearing, think what he is thinking and feel what his emotions are while the other characters' feelings, thoughts are a mystery. The author wrote Jeff as if he was the character and not the author writing this novel. Jeff's personality is quite hilarious, “A ballerina... she’s trapped inside me. She wants to come out.” The book was pretty much stander tenth grade reading. The writing style is like he was speaking. There was not much of imagery. There were flashbacks, and they play important parts in the novel. Foreshadowing did make itself known when Jeff was having his sessions with Dr. Katzrupus. Separation of paragraphs were for sure there. Though there were some long narratives, it also have a lot of dialogues. I immediately predicted that this novel had to do with suicide.

  4. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The book is based on Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives and a Mississippi town upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue to work together and soon more women come forward to tell their stories. Along the way, unlikely friendships are introduced.

Skeeter is the 22-year-old privileged daughter of a wealthy cotton plantation owner. She returns to Jackson, Mississippi, following her college graduation and finds that her perspective on the division between white Southern households and black maids has changed. Skeeter wants to be a writer, but her mother wants her to be a wife. She approaches an editor in New York City with the idea of writing about black maids in her town and is tentatively given approval. The project begins her transformation from the woman she was raised to be to the independent, brave woman who chooses her own path.
Skeeter's character represents the theme of isolation throughout the novel. For example, she becomes isolated from the community of southern women in which she was raised. Her mother doesn’t consider her as a “perfect housewife.” When Skeeter returns from university, she tries to go back to her old life but finds that the life she left behind now looks different. Her isolation eventually leads to self-awareness of her role within the segregated society, which shocks her and motivates her writing project. The writing project also leads to a friendship with Aibileen, a wise black maid who has raised seven white children who worked for Elizabeth Leefolt, a good family friend of Skeeter’s family. Aibileen introduces Skeeter to several black maids who follow Skeeter’s beliefs to stop segregation within the community.
The setting is in the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The story usually takes place inbetween Skeeter’s home and the maids homes. In some cases, the story takes place in the workplace of the maids.

There are many problems in the story, but the main conflict in “The Help” is the problems between the maids and their bosses. They were treated badly, but It was always kept “hush hush” especially in a predominant southern community. Until Hilly Holbrook, a high class southern belle who mistreated her maids in a very disrespectful way. Skeeter and the maids main reason to write the book was for the community to realize this terrible injustice is happing and should be stopped immediately.

The theme in this story is mostly to stand for what you believe in. If you really have a strong judgment about a subject and feel like you need to share it to the world, go for it. Eventually, it will lead to a positive outcome and resolve any issues that were created in the past.

The Help is written in the first person point of view. The narrator is Skeeter because throughout the book, she was narrating the story. She describes everything that is happening and all the events that took place in the story, which a is the role of a narrator.

  6. Hunger Games: By Suzanne Collins

The country of Panem has thirteen districts. The thirteenth district revolted on the capital. District thirteen was destroyed. To keep the other districts from revolting, the capital created the hunger games. This is when two children a girl and a boy the ages twelve to eighteen are chosen to go into an arena and fight till the death. Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen year old girl living in district twelve. She has a little sister and a mom. Her dad died in a mining explosion. Every day she goes into the woods and hunts so she can keep her family alive. It is illegal to hunt but her and her friend Gale does it all the time. It is the day of the reaping or when they choose the children. They start with the girls and they call her little sisters name. Katniss steps in and takes her place. They then choose the boy. The name they chose was Peeta Mellark. They are both sent off to the capital to fight in the games. They get a mentor whose name is Haymitch and they each get stylists, Katniss’s stylist name is Cinna. The first week in the capital they try to impress people so they can sponsor them in the games. They have a parade and then they train. After training they present their skills to the gamemakers and then the game makers give them a score. Katniss is good with a bow and Peeta is strong. They are then interviewed and Peeta says that he is in love with Katniss. They are now called the “star-crossed lovers.” Every tribute was sent to the arena and by the first day half of them were dead so twelve are remaining. Katniss teams up with a little girl from district eleven. She ends up dying. Peeta ends up getting hurt and Katniss nurses him to health. The gamemakers change the rules and say two people can win as long as they are from the same district. It is Katniss, Peeta, and the guy from district two left. Katniss ends up killing the guy from district one leaving just Peeta and her. No winning trumpets go off. Katniss takes out these deadly berries they both put them up to their lips. Then the trumpets go off. They win! After the games they are sent on a train to go home. They get to district twelve and have this big feast and go on with their lives.

Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist. She has brown hair and blue eyes. I say she is very determined and tries to keep her word. She is very shy. She does not have too many relationships. She pretends that she likes Peeta to get sponsors. Peeta Mellark is a guy who speaks his mind. He has a way with words to make people like him. He is a baker’s son and is very strong. Haymitch Abernathy is a drunk. He is always drunk and doesn’t care about anything. He ends up getting on his feet and helps out his two mentees. Primrose Everdeen is the protagonist’s sister. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She loves animals and really into helping people. Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’s best friend. He is strong and not afraid of standing up for what he believes in. President Snow is the antagonist of the book. He is a cruel man and only thinks about himself. He always smells deathly sweat. He does not like Katniss because she rebelled against him by taking the berries out.

The setting starts in the seam of district twelve. District twelve is the poorest of the twelve districts. They are the mining district. Outside of the seam there are the woods. That is where Katniss goes and hunts with Gale. They trade the game or meat in the black market inside their district. The next setting is the capital. The capital has all these really tall building and a lot of people. Everyone is really rich. After the capital they go to the arena. The arena is this big mountainous area that has all these trees and then there are some plane areas to with rivers and lakes. The arena is surrounded by a force field like thing. That is all of the settings in this book.

  7. Part 2

There are multiple conflicts in this book. There is the obvious one of man vs. man which is Katniss going up against twenty three other tributes in an arena. There are also conflicts that are not that obvious. Like man vs. themself. Katniss misses her family and wishes she was with them but she keeps on fighting on for her sister. She also has to decide if she will help Peeta and go get the medicine she needs. This book also has man vs. nature because Katniss has to fight through whatever nature throws at her. She has to deal with cold weather and fires but those also tie into with man vs. man because the gamemakers are the people that control all of that.

I would say that the theme of this book is to fight for what you believe in. No matter what life throws at you, you can do anything. Also that you can do anything as long as you believe in yourself. I think these are the messages that the author is trying to let you know. I think the main one in this story would have to be fight for what you believe in. I say it is this one because Katniss does not care about anything but when she is at the end and she pulls out the berries she knows that everyone would get mad. She did it anyway because she thought it was wrong that they lied to her. She fought for what she believed in.

This book is written in Katniss’s point of view. First person and present tense. There is a lot of imagery in this book. The author describes things so well. There are moments when Katniss has flashbacks about her little sister and Gale in the woods. There isn’t really any foreshadowing though besides in the beginning you can tell that she is going to be in the hunger games. There are three parts to the book. Each part has about ten chapters in them. The title told me that there was going to be a game that has to do with starvation. That is the style and point of view in this book.

  9. Imaginary Girls
    By : Nova Ren Suma
Chloe’s older sister, Ruby, is the girl everyone wants to be like and every boy dreams of. When a night with Ruby’s friends goes horribly wrong and Chloe discovers the dead body of her classmate London Hayes left floating in the reservoir, Chloe is sent away from town and away from Ruby. Ruby will do anything to get her sister back, and when Chloe returns to town two years later, deadly surprises come out.

Chloe is the main character in the story. Chloe is shy and thinks her sister is the best. In the book she compares herself to her sister a lot and at times it seems like she thinks her sister is better than her. Chloe will also do anything her sister, Ruby tells her to do. As the book progresses she becomes more independent and challenges her sister’s demands. Ruby was more of the outgoing person; she was the girl everyone wants to be like. Ruby is very protective over Chloe but at times it seemed like she treated Chloe however she wanted to. Ruby was also very controlling and selfish. London Hayes, a depressed girl who ends up being quite mysterious in the novel.

“Imaginary Girls” takes place in a small town. Everyone in town seems to love Ruby. She takes advantage of that and does as she desires.

A big conflict in the story is when Chloe finds the body of her classmate London Hayes in the reservoir. This makes a big impact in the story because this makes Chloe leave the town for two years and away from Ruby. Then when Chloe comes back she tries to figure out what is going on and to find out what her sister is hiding.

I think you can interpret the book in many ways but to me the theme was about absent parents and sisterly love. The book really focuses of what happens when parents are absent and what it causes. The book also focuses in how sisters will love each other no matter what, like how Chloe loves Ruby even though she has made mistakes like herself.

The book is told in a first person’s point of view by Chloe. Chloe tells us a lot about her sister and how great she thinks her sister is, but even still Chloe isn’t a reliable narrator. The style of the story was imagery, descriptive, and used creative metaphors to tell the story. The storyline was multilayer, reading the book just once gave me the main ideas of the book but reading it twice would help me understand deeper.

    Small eternities

Alaric and Naia are two teenagers who have never met in their lives. After a while they discover that they were living the most identical life but in two total different and separate places in the world. After a coincidence they both come to live to Wither Rise. Their family’s home is the wither rise. In the summer something very tragically happened. Strong rains cause the river to overflow. The familys special home withern rise is now under water. Through out trying to survive the natural disaster of the rain they find a boy named Aldous Underwood. At first they don’t who he is but then after a while they discover that this boy has a huge impact to both their lives.
Alaric and Naia at first are complete strangers. After about a 13 years of their lives they come to live to Wither Rise, their actual home since little and they realize they are related, they are sister and brother. After disaster in there home an unidentified boy comes along. After research they find out boys name is Aldous Underwood. Aldous underwood is there same exact age. They are all 14. so how can Alaric and Naia be brother and sister? Who actually is Aldous Underwood?
The setting in this book named, small eternities, usually and most of the time takes place in their home the Withern Rise. This place is very important to all and suffers many disasters throughout time, especially when all three kids are together, Alaric, Naia, and Aldous.
After research being done by Alaric and Naia they find out they are all brother and sister, triplets. This was done awkwardly though. They were all born at the same time, same hospital, and exact same date. They don’t have same father but do have same mother. How was this all done? It’s a mystery. Whenever they become united all three, a tragedy usually happens. The tragedy is more likely to happen to their home, the Wither rise. First strategy was not detected as it being their unity but after the overflow of the river they did speculations. When the three unite the disaster begins. Its said to be that in the next unity that all three have, one of the three will die, but who will die? Its left without an answer.
In my opinion the theme in the story is that you never really know the actual wonders of the world and human beings. It is a kind of out of the ordinary book but the story itself keeps you highly entertained. The ending isn’t so good because you are left without a clue on which one of the three dies.
I think this book is told in the third person omniscient. The narrator in the story isn’t included as a character and doesn’t express his/her feeling but does say everything he/she sees, experiences, hears, and the thoughts of all characters. The manner in which the narrator expresses him or herself is in a very educated high class person. The words he/she says are very describable.

    Passion by Laruen Kate

    Part 1.

This novel is the third book of the Fallen series. In this book Luce is on a journey through her past lives moving through announcers (also known as portals) to find out if someone or something can explain why she dies everytime her and Daniel (fallen angel lover) show their affections for eachother in different lives she explodes. She is going back in time to try and make their love last in her current life time. In Luces journey she will incounter many past lives and live them again and see what life style she lived. She meets new friends named Shelby, Miles, and an announcer travaler named Bill. She learns how to read the memories in the announcers and looks at past life’s. She learns to travel through the announcers with her friend Bill, who helps her on her journey to different times and places.

Luce is the main character, she is seventeen, and she has short black hair. Luce is very smart and very beautiful, She starts rebelling, questioning everything, and creating her own world, not just going with it. Her boyfriend is Daniel, he is a fallen angel. He is tall, handsome with slim black hair with a fallen angel attitude. He is very strong and is always watching over Luce. His way of pertecting Luce is by keeping secerets from her. Daniel and Luce share a love like no other. Shelby is a very stubbern very persistsnt girl. She is Luces room mate at the shorewood school where Luce is pertected. Shelby is jealous of Luce and Daniel. Miles is another main character who also goes to the highschool and he loves Luce and always tells her how much he cares. Hes a very strong hearted, sweet and layed back kind of guy. Luce has feelings for him to. He has tons of emotions and he really opens up to Luce all the time.

This story takes place in many locations. There is no certain location it happens in many different places all over the world in different time periods but traveling back in time. The setting can take place anywhere from China to Africa, from the current time period all the way to 220 b.c. One time period was during world war one i believe. Luce travels back in time to her past lives, which can be any where in the world.

  12. Part 2.

The main external problem is man vs. man dealing with Luce and her past lives. Luce is also having an internal conflict with herself, she doesn't know what path she wants to take between figuring out her love with Daniel or just leave him which in her mind is basically impossible but can happen. She wants to understand whats going on with her desire for Daniel and find out all the hidden secerets shes finally learning about. Luce thinks for herself and is trying to deal with her own problems and make things right before thinking of anything else right now.

This story is based on many themes. no specific one but i would say the main theme would most likely be to figure out who you really are and figure out your own path and destiny. Through out the book Luce is finding her self within. Going back in time looking at her past lives becoming together as one, her path changes over and over. She starts thinking of what to do and thinks of her decisions and options that are left. More than half the people today in life aren't picking their own paths or destinies, they are picking other peoples to fit in and help other people instead of helping their selves first. The way things are in our life time is difficult and I honestly think that is why Lauren Kate chose to write the Fallen Series because she wants to get the message out to kids that you need to be yourself and pick your own path dont be a follow be a leader and make your own decisions.

This novel is in first person. The author talks about a lot referring to herself to Luce. The story is mainly focused on Luce what she wants what she feels and what she does. Lauren Kate explains to readers through Luce’s thoughts or point of views. She uses Luce’s thoughts as a way to explain her own thoughts. This book is very discriptive when it comes to the middle or end of the book. The pages were in paragraph, and there was a chapter for each time period and year in this novel, and in the last book Torment the chapters were days. There is dialog, the author makes it clear what she wants you to understand what shes saying and what she feels in the dialog. The book itself is overall an amazing novel along with the other books
