Fahrenheit 451 - Chapter 3 “Burning Bright”

AS OF 1/1/13, THIS ASSIGNMENT IS COMPLETE AND NOLONGER
CAN BE SUBMITTED VIA THIS BLOG. SEE MR. DAWURSK TO
COMPLETE AS AN ALTERNATIVE LATE ASSIGNMENT.

First, choose just THREE questions from the eight below and write at least a one paragraph response for each of the questions you chose. Put all the paragraph responses under the same comment. Include any evidence from the reading to prove your arguments (your point of views).

Next, after you have written your comments, then write a one to two sentence reply to someone else's paragraphs.

Finally, this blog assignment is due no later than 9 AM on Friday, December 7, 2012.

Here are the questions. Remember to choose only THREE to answer.

  1. What is the explanation which Montag and Faber arrive at for how so very much could have happened within one week? Why?  Explain your answer.
  2. Describe the effects of the war as Montag imagined them.  Why?  Explain your answer.
  3. What is the promise at the end of the novel?  Why?  Explain your answer.
  4. What’s up with those chapter divisions? Does the plot seem suited to its three-part format? What do you make of those chapter titles? Explain your answer.
  5. Does the violence prevalent in the futuristic world of this novel comment in any way on our own society? Do we, in a way, love violence as well? Is there anything wrong with that? What’s healthy and what’s not?
  6. Bradbury has stated that the novel is not about censorship, but since Captain Beatty cites censorship as one of the main reasons books ended up banned, we’re going to ask you this question anyway: where can we draw the line with appropriate censorship and shameless destruction of information?
  7. Check out the cover image for the 50th Anniversary Edition. What do you make of the fact that a man, made of books, is being burned, rather than just a pile of books?
  8. Bradbury says his novel is about TV replacing books, not about censorship. Does he get to say what his book is about? Is he “right”?

  1. I think that there are three chapters because Montag kind of changes three times. In the first chapter he is a true fireman and begins to change just a little bit. Then in the next chapter he begins to change even more and begins to figure some things out. Lastly the last chapter Montag figures out who he really is. He ends up finding what he should do to help. Another reason why the book is split in three is that Bradbury wanted it to be like a play. Plays usually have three acts in them. Well that is what I think is why Bradbury splits his book into three parts.

As the airplanes are flying over the town he begins to worry about Clarisse, Mildred, and Faber. He thinks about how Clarisse is dead. He even starts to image Mildred in her hotel room talking to her "family" in the walls and how she doesn't know what is about to happen. He thinks about Faber in the train now on a train to practically no where. Then he starts to remember. Remembers where Mildred and him met in Chicago. He also remembers a part in the book of Ecclesiastes. All these things affected Montag.

Th novel promises at the end of the book a new era. An era were people will think and read. They will learn. Where people will not be so into technology. Humanity is not completely doomed. Montag recalls something from the bible, "To everything there is a season. A time to break down, a time to build up." It says that the time for destruction is over and the time of rebirth has begun.

    1. I agree with number four because the three parts showed how Montag progressed in the story. It did show when and how he figued situations out. Overall, I agree with all your answers. Fantastic job!

    2. Montag did change over the chapters. I totally agree with your answer, also on why it is spilt into three chapters.

    3. I agree with your last answer. It is like they have a new begining or a fresh start. They want to do things right this time.

  2. 4. The chapter divisions were meant to be like a play-like story. Most plays sum up the story into 3 "acts", or parts. The chapters show how Montag progressed on figuring out who he is and what society has done to him. Every chapter shows how he is changing, like for example, the first chapter he is trying to figure out what he should do to help society, until the last chapter, where he finally knows what to do to help out.

    6. Captain Beatty cites censorship as one of the main reasons books ended up banned, because it was the people of the city that didn't want the books. Censorship is when you ban something from a place or thing. Shameless destruction of information is when you ban something, and you try to take away that something from the whole world, which is happening in Montag's city at the moment.

    7. The 50th Anniversary Edition of "Fahrenheit 451" was most likely to mean that even though books were banned, some people still liked them. The fire represents the banning or the elimination of books and how that impacted people emotionally.

    1. I totally agree with number 7 I do think that the burning of the books had an emotional impact on people. Also The dividing of the chapters is great, I do believe it was supposed to be like a play.

    2. I love your answer. It makes so much sense. True, people who like books simply just cannot stop themselves from reading.

  3. 3.) The Novel Promises A New Life , To Start Over .
To Be Much Smarter And That Way Society Will Not Fell Like Technology Is Taking Over. They Will Be Aloud To Read And To Think And To Be Free.

6.)Beatty Cites Censorship For One Of The Reason That Books Are Illegal & Not Aloud Because It Was Human Being , People ,Not Just The Giverment Who Wanted Them Banned Because There Were Being Taken Over By Technology.

8.) I Think He Does Get To Say What His Book Is About Because He is The Author , iDont Think He Realized That He May Have Used Some Censorship Throught Out The Chapters.

  4. Three chapters because Montag changes three times. In the beginning, he was a man who has the title of being a fireman that starts fire. As he meet Clarisse who had challenged his thoughts. As the second chapter goes on, Montag begin to question himself on who he really is. However, later on, he gradually notice his true self that was definitely not a fireman. In order to make it like a play, Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 in three chapters.

The promise is that a new era is about to begin and humanity is not completely doomed. An ear that promised things will change, people will read, learn, write and think. Montag and the many other people will change the ugly society. The most important part was to write the books again.

The picture simply stated that one does not give up on something they love to do –in this case, reading books– no matter what price do they have to pay nor how forbidden it was.

  5. 3.)The promise at the end of the novel is that a new era is about to begin. The promise is of a better world in the future where people are allowed to think and speak. Also where books are not destroyed but allowed to be read.At the end of the novel, Montag recalls the biblical passage, "To everything there is a season. A time to break down, a time to build up." The time for destruction has ended; the time for rebirth has begun.
4.)The book is divide in 3 chapters because in each chapter Montag changes and also it was meant to be like a play.In most plays they are divide into three acts or parts. In each chapter you notice how he changes from not knowing what he wanted, not thinking, and burning books to a person who thinks and cares about books.

  6. 4. I think that dividing the book into only three chapters made a lot of sense to me. It separated on how Montag changed throughout the story. The first part Montag was just like everyone else. The second part he started to think about reading books and how he wasn’t happy. The third part was on how Montag started reading books and he burned his house down and ran away.

    5. I think the way people drive the cars around trying to hit people is bad. In today people do love violence. That’s why people like to watch football. They like violence. But they do have it in control were they are not killing each other. I think we have a health about of violence in today’s world.

    1. I think that Montag and Faber did stuff so fast because they knew something was going to happen. I think they knew that there was going to be another atomic bomb. They also did not want to be caught reading books. It ended so early because they got caught and Montag had to run away. I think that if they would have planned a little longer that they could have gotten away with more stuff.
